COURAGE

Paulo Coelho: Travel is never a matter of money, but of courage.

Daria: "The quote encourages us to look beyond financial excuses and recognise that what we often need most is bravery and determination."

------------------

About courage in Romanian (group work) - the final result is this:

Curaj

-------------------

are some tasks on Bertolt Brecht's play "Mother Courage and Her Children", created by the Romanian team.

-------------------

The Spanish team came up with the idea of STRENGTHS PERFORMANCES - the creation of short movies focused on the different strengths. The students, divided into groups, were given a card with information about the scene they had to perform (strength, situation, characters). They created dialogues and they recorded short videos. All the performances were gathered in a film. This is the card for COURAGE:

It is 1960. The use of animals in shows is still legal. The "Fuerzabruta" circus has hired Sofia, a young promise of the show. Sofia is very nervous, because she is a magnificent trapeze artist, but they have proposed to her to be the new lion tamer. Today is the first rehearsal, and she will be in front of a pair of lions.

-------------------

Courage can take different forms — silent persistence and bold self-expression. What follows is a 50-minute lesson about students exploring self-identity, confidence, and peer acceptance. Students often feel pressure to be loud and visible — this lesson validates both quiet strength and outspoken power.

What Does Courage Sound Like?

Step 1: Read and Reflect
Read the following quote by Mary Anne Radmacher:

"Courage does not always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, 'I will try again tomorrow.'"

What do you think this quote means?
Write your thoughts below:

Step 2: Listen and Explore
Listen to the song "Roar" by Katy Perry  and fill in the gaps with the missing words.

Roar

I used to bite my tongue and hold my breath,
Scared to rock the boat and make a mess
So I sat _______________, agreed politely.

I guess that I forgot I had a choice,
I let you push me past the breaking point.
I stood for nothing, so I fell for everything.

You held me down, but I got up,
Already brushing off the _______________.
You hear my voice, you hear that sound
Like thunder gonna _______________ the ground.
You held me down, but I got up,
Get ready 'cause I've had enough
I see it all, I see it now
I got the eye of the tiger,
A fighter,
Dancing through the fire
'Cause I am a champion and you're gonna hear me roar
Louder, louder _______________ a lion
'Cause I am a champion and you're gonna hear me roar!

Now I'm floating like a butterfly,
Stinging like a bee I earned my _______________,
I went from zero to my own hero!

What kind of courage is Katy Perry singing about?
Describe it in your own words.

Step 3: Comparison
How are the quote and the song similar? How are they different?
Complete the table below:

Mary Anne Radmacher's Quote

Type of courage

Voice/Action

Key message

Step 4: Personal Reflection

Think about your own experiences.

Write about a time when you showed quiet courage:

......................................................................................
......................................................................................
......................................................................................

Write about a time when you had to 'roar' and speak up:

......................................................................................
......................................................................................
......................................................................................

Step 5: Extension

Choose one:

  • Make a poster titled "Courage: More Than One Voice".
  • Write a dialogue between two characters: one who is quietly courageous and one who is outspoken. Let them talk about how they each deal with challenges.

Rock

Final Thought:
Courage comes in many forms. Whether it whispers or roars, it matters.
