Outcomes of the Education, Youth, Culture and Sports Council, 18-19/05/2015

Ministers assessed the achievements of European cooperation in the field of education and training ("ET 2020"), and discussed its future development in preparation for the mid-term stocktaking and the 2015 Ƶt Report. The Council adopted conclusions on reinforcing youth work, highlighting its contribution to personal development, social inclusion, cultural diversity and active citizenship. Ministers also discussed how to improve political participation by young people in the democratic life of Europe.

Europeana for Education policy recommendations

This document proposes a set of recommendations for the use of digital cultural heritage in education and learning. It concerns all forms and levels of education and learning, from formal classroom teaching in schools and universities to adult education and informal learning in, for instance, the context of associations or at home. These recommendations are the work of policymakers from European Ministries of Culture and Education and experts in the field of education from 21 different countries. They were created at strategy meetings under the Italian and Latvian Presidencies (2014/2015), facilitated by the Europeana Foundation, European Schoolnet and EUROCLIO - European Association of History Educators.

EC report: showing films and other audiovisual content in European Schools - obstacles and best practices

A new EU study recommends including the film literacy in school curricula, and promoting the establishment of general rules for licensing schemes, then contributing to a wider use of films and other audiovisual content in European Schools. The study provides recommendations on how to better facilitate the use of films and other audiovisual content in European Schools. The recommendations will be used when assessing the Film literacy support scheme of Creative Europe MEDIA, and will also feed into the discussions on copyright reform.

Following the intention to better understand the phenomenon of ICT in the first stage of institutional compulsory education the present analytical study published in Volume 3 describes five bright case studies from Singapore, Russian Federation, Mexico, Slovakia and Canada with good examples and innovative approaches to infrastructure development, curriculum design and ICT teacher competencies development.

Action research to improve youth and adult literacy: empowering learners in a multilingual world

The present action research has identified five guiding principles for youth and adult literacy programmes: (1) inclusion; (2) lifelong learning; (3) literacy perceived from a multilingual and multicultural perspective and as an essential aspect of the human right to education; (4) a multilingual and multicultural ethos; and (5) sustainability. These guiding principles are the pillars of the quality framework for youth and adult literacy education and learning which is proposed in this book.

Improving school climate and students' opportunities to learn: teaching in focus (2015/09 - January)

The Teaching in Focus briefs shed new light on issues surrounding the teaching and learning environment in schools and teachers’ working conditions. They present data from the Teaching and Ƶing International Survey (TALIS). This issue looks at how to improve the school climate, as almost one in three teachers across countries participating in the 2013 TALIS reports having more than 10% of potentially disruptive students with behaviour problems in their classes.
