  • Understand and work with ‘Guiding Input’, where participants experience a wide range of input content materials and see how structures are designed and exploited to help learners navigate their way through this audiovisual content.
  • Understand the role of conceptual structures in the processing of textual and multi media input content and use this understanding to produce effective input guidance activities and materials.
  • Understand and work with ‘Supporting Output’, where colleagues look at the demands of speaking and writing in their specific subject areas and use this knowledge to scaffold learner production.
  • Gain an understanding of as well as techniques for making salient for learners the different layers of language in educational content (see website)

Methodology & assessment

This course program follows a daily structure to present participants with principles which are then exemplified by actual materials and resources designed following these principles. Participants will be asked to then carry out similar tasks as learners, and then discuss their experiences and the principles as teachers. This then leads to applying insights gained into materials production for the specific subject areas of the course participants. Participants share their work with colleagues in group and plenary and are facilitated in this process both by each other, but also by the tutor overseeing this process. It is envisaged that by learning about CLIL by putting it into practice themselves, participants will develop a rich understanding of the experiences of their own learners in terms of language and content demands.
