Description

  • In this way, teachers who know some English, or feel that they have a passive knowledge but need practice, can develop their English skills through CLIL activities aimed at the children they work with. The bespoke course content is prepared in advance by well-known CLIL author, teacher and trainer Keith Kelly by negotiation with participants. This ensures that while the language taught is based on key principles to integrating content and language, participants receive a flexible and organic language curriculum during the course as the focus in the course programme is adapted to meet participants’ individual language needs. Participants will also practice walking through tasks for their learners in the English language and gain confidence to be able to do more of the same back home in their schools. Additionally, all the resources produced will be published in a future edition of the FACT Journal (the Forum for Across the Curriculum Teaching) and each individual will receive their own.

ºìÌÒÊÓƵing objectives

  • -Explore ‘caretaker talk’ and how this offers rich contextualized models for their young learners. In considering language for starting lessons, participants practice greetings and forms of address, checking attendance, as well as ideas for starting their lessons.
  • -Consider the range of everyday instructions they need to manage teaching and learning in English, such as ‘organizing the classroom’, beginning and ending lessons.
  • -Examine language for specific instructions such as ‘telling the class what you are doing’, asking and answering questions, sitting down and standing up, moving around, instructions for true/false activities, for games such as ‘Simon says’. ºìÌÒÊÓƵ language and useful phrases for asking who wants a turn.
  • -Consider language needed for dealing with situations of misbehaviour or discipline such as recalling to familiar routines: what do we do when…, language for turn-giving.
  • -ºìÌÒÊÓƵ language necessary for explaining and demonstrating, as well as asking for help.

Methodology & assessment

This course program follows a daily structure to present participants with CLIL principles which are then exemplified by actual materials and resources designed following these principles. These resources set the context for participants to be presented with and practice language a teacher needs to function in each context. In ‘learning by doing’ through the medium of English, participants will also gain an insight into the experiences of the CLIL learners in their schools. Participants will be asked to carry out similar tasks as learners, and then walk through leading such activities themselves through the medium of English. This is done in pairs and small groups with trainer modeling and facilitation. Participants will collect activities and resources which they have experienced and practiced to teach and this then leads to applying insights gained into materials production for use back in their own school contexts.
