During the festive Christmas season, our students had a special activity. They exchanged Christmas greetings using online translation tools. The messages were originally written in Spanish, Slovenian, and German and then translated into different languages. This fun project allowed students to explore how machines can help with language but also make mistakes.

First, students wrote messages in their own language. After that, they used Google Translate to change the messages into a foreign language. Then they sent them to their partners and the partners commented on the translations. They found out that the machine translations were mostly okay, but sometimes funny mistakes happened, like turning a person's name into an animal's name.

The students also noticed that Slovenian messages were a bit tricky for Google Translate, probably because Slovenia is a small country and Slovenian is not spoken by many people. It struggled with things like telling if the message was about a girl or a boy. Even with these challenges, the translated messages made sense, and the activity showed the students how technology is helping with languages but still has some things to learn. This Christmas project was not just about spreading joy but also learning about the interesting world of language. 

We are interested to see what the future holds for languages and translations.

Also, as part of the holiday season, the teachers took it a step further and recorded themselves while reading and wishing seasons greetings in the languages of their partners.
