1) CLIL lesson: The Book of Kells

As the History teacher I prepared CLIL lesson for 8th Graders  focused on introducing The Book of Kells . It provided a framework for teaching them about Irish history and developing their English language skill at the same time. The Book of Kells is a national treasure for Ireland and a symbol of its rich cultural heritage. It´s like a window to the past - into early medieval Ireland, its monastic culture and the lives of the people who created it. I´ve visited  its exhibition in Trinity College´s Old Library during my course stay in Dublin and I wanted my pupils to get to know about it aswell. Introducing them this manuscript I tried to help them understand this period of Irish history and importance of the role of religion in society. Studying this books can also inspire the them to explore their own creativity through art, calligraphy and design. They can learn a lot from the techniques used in this manuscript and incorporate them into their own art work. In other words The Book of Kells naturally connects history and art, providing a rich context for understanding both subjects. 

By teaching pupils about the Book of Kells, teachers can provide them with a valuable learning experience that connects history, art, culture, and critical thinking. It's a way to bring the past to life and arouse their interest. 

 CLIL vyučovacia hodina:  The Book of Kells

Ako učiteľka dejepisu som pripravila  vyučovaciu hodinu CLIL pre mojich ôsmakov zameranú na oboznámenie s Knihou z Kellsu. Hodina žiakom poskytla možnosť výučby o írskej histórii a zároveň možnosť rozvíjať ich znalosti anglického jazyka. Kniha z Kellsu je národným pokladom Írska a symbolom jeho bohatého kultúrneho dedičstva. Je ako okno do minulosti – do raného stredovekého Írska, jeho kláštornej kultúry a života ľudí, ktorí toto dielo vytvorili. Počas môjho študijného pobytu v Dubline som navštívila aj expozíciu venovanú The Book of Kells v Long Library v  Trinity College. Chcela som, aby ju spoznali aj moji žiaci. Predstavením tohto rukopisu som sa im snažila pomôcť pochopiť toto obdobie írskej histórie a dôležitosť úlohy náboženstva v spoločnosti. Štúdium tejto knihy ich môže tiež inšpirovať k objavovaniu ich vlastnej kreativity prostredníctvom umenia, kaligrafie a dizajnu. Môžu sa veľa naučiť z techník použitých v tomto rukopise a zapojiť ich do svojich vlastných umeleckých diel. Inými slovami, Kniha z Kellsu prirodzene spája históriu a umenie a poskytuje bohatý obsah pre pochopenie oboch týchto predmetov. Učením o Knihe z Kellsu môžu učitelia poskytnúť žiakom cennú vzdelávaciu skúsenosť, ktorá spája históriu, umenie, kultúru a kritické myslenie. Je to spôsob, ako oživiť minulosť a vzbudiť v žiakoch záujem.

2) KWL method (8th Graders)

The lesson consisted of few activities. But the crucial method I´ve used was the KWL method. We started with filling in the first column of the KWL chart „ what we know“ about The Book of Kells. Pupils continued with Gallery walk online, where they could see the visuals and summarized text of The Book of Kells. They wrote some words which interested them in second column „what we want to know“ about this masterpiece to find out their meaning. The following activity was focused on reading comprehention. Detailed studying of the text gave pupils the answers to unknown expressions in second column and they could complete the third part of the chart „what we have learnt“ about The Book of Kells.  I consider using this method in History lessons quite effective because it allows pupils to self assess their learning by completing the KWL chart with what they have learnt. 

KWL metóda (8. ročník)

Vyučovacia hodina pozostávala z niekoľkých aktivít. Kľúčovou metódou, ktorú som použila, bola metóda KWL (Čo vieme, Čo chceme vedieť, Čo sme sa naučili). Začali sme vyplňovaním prvého stĺpca KWL tabuľky „čo vieme“ o Knihe z Kellsu. Žiaci pokračovali online galériou, kde si mohli pozrieť vizuály a súhrnný text o Knihe z Kellsu. Do druhého stĺpca „čo chceme vedieť“ o tomto majstrovskom diele napísali slová, ktoré ich zaujali a chceli zistiť ich význam. Nasledujúca aktivita bola zameraná na čítanie s porozumením.  Podrobním čítaním textu žiaci našli význam neznámych slov v druhom stĺpci a mohli doplniť tretiu časť tabuľky „čo sme sa naučili“ o Knihe z Kellsu. Používanie tejto metódy na hodinách dejepisu považujem za veľmi efektívne, pretože postupné doplnenie KWL tabuľky informáciami, ktoré sa naučili, umožňuje žiakom samohodnotenie vlastného učenia. 

3) Illustrations and ornaments in the Book of Kells (5th Graders)

Exploring the content of historical books through illustrations and ornaments can spark pupils' imagination and encourage them to think creatively about the past. That's why I decided to focus my fifth-grade history lesson on recognizing patterns and figures depicted in the Book of Kells. In the beginning, I briefly introduced them this medieval manuscript. After a more detailed examination, we started drawing typical Celtic knots and spirals. Gradually, the pupils tried to depict some animal figures – snakes, peacocks, rabbits, lions, and mice. At this point they had the opportunity to think about their meaning. Many animals represent Christian symbols. Some of them represent Christ, others represent evil, and some represent concepts such as resurrection or immortality. Drawing was a challenge for the pupils, and they realized that drawing even a snake in the style of the Book of Kells is not as easy as it might have seemed at first. Teaching the pupils about these illustrations and ornaments allows them to understand how symbolism was used to express the meaning of the Christian faith. Such art in historical books can be used not only to express meaning but also to tell stories from the past. And as I mentioned at the beginning, these kinds of activities lead our pupils to think creatively about the past.

Skúmanie obsahu historických kníh prostredníctvom ilustrácií a ornamentov môže u žiakov podnietiť predstavivosť a povzbudiť ich k tvorivému premýšľaniu o minulosti. A práve preto som sa rozhodla vyučovaciu hodinu dejepisu žiakov piateho ročníka zamerať na poznávanie vzorov a postáv zobrazených v Knihe z Kellsu.  Na úvod som žiakom tento stredoveký rukopis v krátkosti predstavila. Po detailnejšom skúmaní sme začali kreslením  typických keltských uzlov a špirál. Postupne sa žiaci snažili zobraziť aj niektoré zvieracie postavy – hady, pávy, zajace, levy a myši. A práve tu sa im naskytla možnosť premýšľať nad ich významom.  Mnohé zvieratá totiž predstavujú kresťanské symboly. Niektoré z nich predstavujú Krista, iné predstavujú zlo, ďalšie napríklad vzkriesenie alebo nesmrteľnosť. Kreslenie bolo pre žiakov výzvou a uvedomili si, že nakresliť čo i len hada v ponímaní Knihy z Kellsu nie je tak jednoduché ako sa pôvodne mohlo zdať. Učením žiakov o týchto vizuálnych prvkoch umožňuje pochopiť, ako sa symbolika používala vo vyjadrovaní významu kresťanskej viery. Umenie v historických knihách možno použiť nie len na vyjadrenie významu, ale aj na rozprávanie príbehov z minulosti. A ako som už spomenula na začiatku, práve takéto aktivity vedú žiakov k tvorivému premýšľaniu o minulosti.
