SEL in My English Class

This project is a year-long, themed curriculum designed to support our students in developing social-emotional learning (SEL) and language skills through interactive and engaging activities. Each month, students explore a new theme, beginning with greetings and introductions in December, where they build social connections and practice polite expressions. Activities like "A Cup of ME!" and "Greeting Bingo" help them practice essential communication skills while using digital tools such as ChatterPix for personal introductions. These monthly themes build a foundation for language acquisition and confidence in interacting with others. As the year progresses, the themes move into personal and relational topics, such as family and loved ones, which help students strengthen self-awareness and empathy. For example, in January, students create family trees and discuss family structures, appreciating the diversity in family roles. February’s focus on “People I Love” allows students to express affection by making cards for loved ones and creating digital stories to share. The project also incorporates emotional recognition and expression in March with activities like “Emotion Faces” and “How Do You Feel?” charades, supporting students in understanding and communicating their feelings. The project concludes with themes related to community and environment, such as “Toys and Games” in April, “My House” in May, and “My City” in June. These units encourage students to describe their personal spaces, preferences, and neighborhood landmarks, fostering a sense of belonging and connection to their surroundings. Each theme integrates digital tools, such as drawing dream houses or animating dream toys, offering creative expression through technology. With a comprehensive approach, the project not only enhances students' SEL and language skills but also encourages digital literacy, preparing them for collaborative and self-directed learning experiences.
