Reduce Exclusion, Increase Inclusion At School

The project idea was born from the common need of the four schools often facing challenges such as having pupils demonstrate little respect or empathy; we have negative pupils’ and teaching staff emotions recorded; pupils and even teachers sometimes lack knowledge how to make their community members (including themselves) feel relaxed and welcomed. Well-being of our pupils and staff is of great priority. However, we have noticed inequality between different groups of pupils: our countries' citizens, migrants (Ukrainians are the majority now in Lithuanian schools), the rich and the poor, disadvantaged and advantaged, disabled and abled; There is also prejudice among pupils and teachers. We trust in building friendships, empathy, trust, support, intergrity, participation and tolerance. Hopefully, these measures are able to help us to overcome prejudice. This can start in the classroom. As a tool of teaching all of these these values a role of a teacher comes on the main stage. Moreover, it is no secret that, when it comes to implementing inclusive education at school, parents of disabled pupils or pupils having special needs are often confronted with opposition from other parents of so called “abled“ pupils. Again, a teacher can work as a perfect mediator between a pupil's family and a pupil himself/herself. Therefore, we decided to reach out every individual in our institutions to contribute to their well-being. In other words, we came up with an idea of inclusion of every member of the school by preparing a manual for teaching staff on inclusive education. Not only that, but training of our staff and pupils (in both formal and informal ways) could help us reach our goals. Involving parents into the project activities would greatly benefit everyone. We believe inclusion encourages and improves learning for all children – both those with and without physical and/or emotional disabilities. It boosts understanding, minimizes prejudice and strengthens social integration. We seek to develop schools for all, to raise a common understanding, to give and get support for learning, to prepare teachers and to continue professional development. As there is a lack of effective, easy-to-use methods to share with classroom teachers, we would love to help teachers and create those methods using knowledge gained during our future project partnership time.
