School Education Gateway user survey 2020 – Results

Who are our respondents?
This year the survey attracted 686 participants. A typical survey respondent was female, working in secondary education and living in southern Europe.
Most respondents said they visit the platform once a month (38%). About a quarter visit the platform every second week or more often.
Most of the respondents had found out about School Education Gateway via eTwinning (28%) or Erasmus+ National Agency (24%). However, 13% had heard about it from a colleague.
What format for online professional development is preferred?
The respondents said that they prefer webinars with some interaction (48%) and self-paced courses (44%). The least popular option is long (10-12 hours per week) courses with peer learning (11%).
In the open comments some users indicated they were satisfied with the way webinars worked during the school closures because they were short in time and the webinars provided valuable information on specific topics of interest. Peer learning divides opinions: some users find it as important as the material itself, while others consider it too time-consuming.
What is the impact of articles, webinars and online courses?
The most usual reading frequency for articles is once a month (38%) followed by 1-2 times a year (32%). 16% say that they read articles “never”.
As regards the webinars, 14% say they would join all (or watch the recordings) but 30% had never attended one.
When it comes to online courses, 46% had participated once or several times, while 26% were not familiar at all with the courses.
For online courses, the perceived benefit was higher than for articles and webinars.
What is the benefit of the Erasmus+ Tools?
In the same way the participants were asked if they had published a listing in any of the three Erasmus+ Tools and if so, whether they had found participants/partners.
What other points were addressed?
Other findings of the survey show that:
- The most popular webinar speaker profiles are experienced teachers (selected by 46%) and educational experts (academics) (43%), followed by policymakers and school heads (both 5%).
- 30% of the respondents have visited the European Toolkit for Schools. 60% of them found the videos and the suggesting resources very useful, followed by the resource collection (59%). Only 44% found the self-assessment tool very useful; however, 27% had not used it before responding to the survey.
- 23% of the respondents indicated they use the platform’s YouTube channel regularly or have visited it at least once. Of these, webinar recordings were found very useful by 69% and MOOC videos by 66%.
- 40% of the respondents use the platform in their native language, while 60% use it in a non-native language. The main reasons that respondents gave for browsing in a non-native language were that they are used to browsing in another language (32%) and they also wish to improve their skills in another language (16%). 5% pointed out they were not aware the platform is available in other languages. Only 1% said the translations were not good enough.
The user survey was open from 20 May to 28 June 2020. We would like to thank everyone who took part and who helped us to improve the platform.
