Going beyond gender stereotypes in culture and language

The Education for Equality (E4E) project created tools for teachers to build inclusive, gender-equal learning environments and challenge stereotypes.

The (E4E) project addressed the persistence of gender stereotypes in pre-primary and primary education. It aimed to equip teachers with practical tools to promote equality and respect for all genders, while involving families and communities in this process.

The Erasmus+ -funded project brought together partners from Italy, Spain, Austria and Sweden, combining diverse cultural perspectives and teaching traditions. It focused on building teacher awareness, improving teaching practices and fostering inclusive language and representations in schools.

The include:

  • Teacher toolkit: Practical lesson plans, activities and classroom strategies for addressing gender stereotypes in the classroom.
  • E4E language labs: Guidance and exercises to help educators reflect on and adapt gendered language in different linguistic contexts.
  • Collection of best practices: Case studies from the partner countries showing best practices.
  • E4E guidelines: A document summarising the project’s gender cultural model, toolkit and language lab, as well as description of the testing phase Strategic guidance for promoting equal opportunities and supporting diverse gender identities

Most outputs are available in English, Italian, Spanish, German and Swedish.

The E4E resources were created through close collaboration between a diverse group of educators and organisations. Despite differences in national context, the partnership found a shared framework based on the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, Article 2, which protects against discrimination.

The project involved 16 schools, over 250 teachers and 760 pupils. Subsequently, the network of stakeholders was expanded to also involve associations, public bodies and policymakers who were interested in implementing the project methodology. Thanks to this at least 5 other schools in each country around 60 classes were involved, reaching another 180 teachers, about 900 children, and indirectly up to 1800 parents.

I still remember with great pleasure our collaboration in the project, the wonderful meetings at wonderful places like Toscana, and our very useful products which are still used. I frequently recommend the website to kindergarten and primary school teachers.

Comments by the external reviewers on this resource:

The project focuses on overcoming gender stereotypes in education and is therefore very relevant. It is especially important that it targets pre-primary and primary education.
