
Job-shadowing for Language Teachers
This programme was developed for language teachers working in Adult Education.
It offers participants the opportunity to shadow teachers of English to Adult learners in ATC Language Schools, and to meet with core staff involved in ATC’s quality learning programmes.
Description
On this 20-hour professional development program, visiting teachers are invited to immerse themselves in our school and engage in a variety of shadowing activities comprising:
- Lesson observations
- Meetings with teachers
- Participation in workshops
- Observation of assessment procedures
- Meetings with members of the Academic Management team
Participants observe a lesson every day, selecting an area of focus and working with directed observation tasks, with access to professional development resources for each area.
After each observation they meet with the class teacher to discuss the lesson and reflect on how it might be adapted to suit their own teaching context.

Participants can also learn about ATC’s assessment procedures, including initial level assessment, analysis of students’ learning needs, and classroom-based, weekly formative assessment procedures.
Ƶing objectives
The objectives of this course are to facilitate teachers to:
- Observe a variety of lessons and carry out directed observation tasks.
- Engage in reflective activities for each observed lesson and consider how their learning might be applied in their own classrooms.
- Meet with teachers to review each lesson observed and discuss best practice in teaching and assessment.
- Meet with a member of the Academic Management team to discuss areas of interest.
- Participate in a workshop facilitated by a member of ATC’s academic team.
- Engage in further professional development with resources on ATC’s Platform for Teachers (ATC Connect).
Methodology & assessment
On Day 1 Teachers shadow members of the academic team as they assess new students for level placement, and carry out needs analyses.
Teachers are invited to select areas of focus for the week’s observations, and are given directed observation tasks to guide them in the process.
Participants are also given access to professional development resources for each area of focus, prior to the observations.
After each observation they have the opportunity to meet with the class teacher to discuss the lesson, and reflect on how it might be adapted to suit their own teaching context.
As part of the shadowing experience, participants are provided with the opportunity to take part in workshops with other visiting teachers, and to meet with ATC’s Academic Management team to discuss areas of interest.
