This course is designed to equip teachers and librarians with practical strategies to create and manage inclusive learning spaces. The focus will be on fostering environments that accommodate diverse learners, promote equity, and address well-being, accessibility, and engagement. The sessions will combine theory, practical activities, and reflection. Locations: Oodi, Helsinki University and school

Session 1: Introduction to Inclusive ºìÌÒÊÓÆµing Spaces: Define inclusivity in education; understand key principles.

Session 2: Creating inclusive learning spaces

Session 3: Diverse collection development to enhance well-being

Session 4: Exploring Good Practice Examples (Asian, Finnish and Swedish experiences)

Session 5: Inclusice Leadership practices in learning spaces that promote collaboration, comfort, and accessibility by incorporating flexible seating arrangements and adaptable layouts for diverse learning needs.

Session 9: Actions for Inclusion: fostering diversity in school

Session 10: Educational visit (Helsinki Central Library Oodi, Helsinki University, Finnish schools and other public inclusive learning spaces).

ºìÌÒÊÓÆµing objectives

To define inclusivity in education and to understand key principles.

To explore different types of learner diversity (cognitive, cultural, linguistic, physical).

To design and organize physical spaces that promote collaboration, comfort, and accessibility by incorporating flexible seating arrangements and adaptable layouts for diverse learning needs.

To promote cultural awareness and inclusion in teaching and library practices. 

To plan and create inclusive events and programs.

To integrate SEL strategies into inclusive learning spaces.

To empower students through choice and self-directed learning.

To address multilingualism and language diversity in learning spaces and design a translanguaging strategy.

To implement positive behavior management strategies.

To join and collaborate in intercultural and international environment.

Methodology & assessment

Methodology & Assessment
* Theoretical introduction to the field of designing inclusive learning spaces.
* Analysis of best and poor practice examples.
* Site visits and observations in schools and public libraries.
* Hands-on workshops.
* Group discussions and one-on-one consultations.
