Exploring Identities and Coexistence (Larnaka, Cyprus)
Cyprus is a concrete paradigm through which identities and coexistence of different cultures and diverse civilizations can thrive and offer unique insights of unity and respect. Through immersive experiences and dialogue, participants will explore the histories, identities, and coexistence of Cyprus's multiple communities (Orthodox, Catholics, Muslims, Maronites, Armenians, and Jews).
Description
The course explores Cyprus's multicultural present, shaped by centuries of coexistence among its communities. Participants will explore the historical, social, and cultural dynamics that have defined the island, promoting a deeper understanding of identity and coexistence in diverse settings.
Through interactive workshops, onsite visits, and discussions with local experts and community representatives, participants will gain first-hand insights into how traditions, beliefs, and shared histories have contributed to the island’s unique identity. The program emphasizes dialogue, critical reflection, and the development of practical strategies for promoting inclusivity in educational environments.
The example of Cyprus offers a realisation on how diverse cultures/religions were able to live together by coexisting. It is an unparalleled opportunity to explore how coexistence can be both celebrated and strengthened, empowering educators to inspire positive change in their own institutions.
ºìÌÒÊÓƵing objectives
The course will provide material for critical thinking and better understanding of our common European origins and the present realities. It will help us identify human destiny by continuing to learn about the stories of people who were challenged, persecuted, went missing, but finally overcame and thrived, hoping that this rich and varied history will help us better discover our own identities.
Its diverse heritage makes Cyprus an ideal destination for educators looking to teach their students about the importance of multiculturalism and tolerance and thus, gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of the rich history and culture not only of Cyprus but of their own as well.
Participants will share similar experiences and paradigms from their countries and how they incorporate these experiences in the learning process of their students. The effort is to seek common grounds to enhance the knowledge of our students’ multiple identities.
