The multifunctional magic of stories in learning

In today's world, conflicts, migration, and digitalization have contributed to cultural erosion and societal divisions, significantly affecting the European Union. The decline in cultural transmission threatens the preservation of traditions across generations. This issue is further exacerbated by the increasing presence of digital environments, particularly video games, which overshadow traditional storytelling and diminish children's exposure to cultural narratives. This, in turn, reduces creative thinking and weakens their connection to their heritage. The Tale Class Project aims to address this challenge by revitalizing the tradition of storytelling and reinforcing cultural identity. By understanding fairy tales as shared cultural artifacts, students will engage in an exchange of traditional stories that fosters cross-cultural understanding and unity. This initiative will support the preservation of intangible cultural heritage while simultaneously developing students' creative thinking, language skills, and artistic expression. However, the project is not only about cultural preservation—it is also a strong social inclusion initiative. By actively involving immigrant and refugee students, the project will promote their adaptation to school and society through storytelling activities. This will create opportunities for students of diverse backgrounds to understand and connect with each other. Additionally, intergenerational storytelling—where students learn tales from their elders and share them in the classroom—will strengthen family bonds and reinforce cultural transmission within the household. The importance of cultural preservation in shaping national and collective identities underscores the necessity of funding this project. It is not just an educational initiative, but also a means of passing down cultural knowledge, fostering unity, and instilling moral values and empathy in the younger generation through traditional narration. By participating in this project, children will develop a greater appreciation for their own cultures while learning to embrace others, thereby contributing to the formation of an inclusive and culturally aware society. The concern over declining literacy rates across OECD countries, including Finland, Spain, Turkey, Hungary, and Italy, also serves as a motivation for this project. Literacy is fundamental to personal success and serves as the foundation for lifelong learning. Recognizing its importance, the European Commission has identified literacy, multilingualism, and cultural awareness and expression as key competencies, all of which are embedded in our project. By engaging students with meaningful and diverse reading materials, we seek to cultivate a sustained interest in reading and foster lifelong learning habits. The project aims to enhance reading motivation by providing materials that align with students' interests. Studies have demonstrated that engaging reading programs and activities significantly improve literacy skills and motivation. Therefore, our objective is to introduce a variety of reading resources that will encourage students to develop a passion for reading, thereby strengthening their literacy skills and fostering a deep appreciation for storytelling as a means of learning and cultural exchange.
