M.O.R.E. Than Words Mindfulness, Openness, Resilience, and Empathy through Popular Sayings

"M.O.R.E. Than Words Mindfulness, Openness, Resilience, and Empathy through Popular Sayings” project aims to investigate how traditional sayings, idiomatic expressions, and dialectal phrases can be valuable tools for fostering intercultural awareness, democratic citizenship, and digital literacy among European secondary school pupils. The project involves schools from Austria (Linz), Italy (Palermo), Serbia (Belgrade), Slovakia (Vranov Nad Topl'ou), and Spain (Antequera). Our common idea aims on the principle that language heritage holds within it not only regional identities, but also universal aspects of the human experience, from emotions and lifestyles to cohabitation and citizenship values. Following the example of books such as Yanko Tsvetkov's Atlas of Prejudices and Ella Frances Sanders' Cutting Clouds with the Nose, the project develops an intercultural corpus whereby the students and teachers engage in mobility actions and workshops to explore linguistic texts of cultural, folkloric, and anthropological interest. Throughout this process, students will reflect on shared values, stereotypes, and cultural diversity, while developing empathy, emotional intelligence, and critical thinking. The pedagogical theme of the project is Social and Emotional Ƶing (SEL) as a key approach to interpersonal understanding and resilience building. While the utilization of digital technologies and collaboration platforms allows for the dissemination of outcomes through multimedia resources, creating a sustainable digital archive of popular sayings and cultural heritage. The project does not only seek to record and bring back to life linguistic heritage but also reinterpret it as a living resource capable of empowering intercultural dialogue and civic engagement in today's multilingual European society. By closing the distance between local cultural heritage and everyday educational practice, More than Words seeks to equip young generations with the questioning minds, openness, and digital competences necessary to become active citizens in an increasingly diverse and interconnected world.
