Building Bridges Through Letters

We are delighted to invite your students to join our Penpal Project designed for 9th graders. This initiative aims to foster intercultural understanding, empathy, and authentic communication through the timeless art of letter writing. Our students are eager to connect with peers from different countries, share their stories, and learn about diverse perspectives. Through this exchange, we hope to build meaningful friendships and celebrate our shared humanity. Suggested Letter Topics Each month will focus on a theme to spark thoughtful and engaging exchanges: Month Theme Guiding Questions / Prompts September :Introducing Myself Who am I? What makes me unique? What’s a typical day like in my life? October:My Culture & Traditions What traditions do I celebrate? What’s a special dish, song, or story from my culture? November:School Life & Dreams What’s school like here? What are my goals and dreams for the future? December:Celebrations & Values How do we celebrate holidays? What values matter most to me and my community? January:Reflections & Hopes What have I learned from this exchange? What are my hopes for the world and my generation? Engaging Activities for the Penpal Project 1. 📸 Photo Story Exchange • Activity: Students share 3–5 photos representing their daily life, culture, or hobbies, with short captions. • Purpose: Visual storytelling deepens understanding and sparks curiosity. • Extension: Create a joint digital collage or Padlet wall with partner school. 2. 🎨 Cultural Symbol Swap • Activity: Each student draws or describes a symbol from their culture (e.g., a traditional motif, landmark, or object) and explains its meaning. • Purpose: Encourages reflection on identity and cultural heritage. • Extension: Turn symbols into a collaborative “Culture Quilt” poster or digital mosaic. 3. 🎧 Music & Mood Exchange • Activity: Students share a favorite song from their country and explain why it resonates with them. • Purpose: Music bridges emotions and cultural insights. • Extension: Create a shared Spotify playlist titled “Voices of Our Generation.” 4. 🗺️ My City, My World – Virtual Tour • Activity: Students create short video clips or illustrated maps introducing their hometown. • Purpose: Builds geographical awareness and pride in local identity. • Extension: Host a virtual “City Fair” where students present their tours live or asynchronously. 5. ✍️ Collaborative Storytelling • Activity: Penpals co-write a short story, alternating paragraphs or chapters. • Themes: Friendship across borders, solving a global challenge, or a fictional cultural exchange. • Extension: Publish stories in a digital booklet or e-magazine. Kindness Capsule Students write short messages of hope or encouragement to their penpals. Compile into a “Global Kindness Wall.” • 📅 Shared Calendar of Celebrations Students add cultural holidays to a shared calendar and exchange greetings or themed activities.
