Behind the Wall

Paraphrasing Sami Naïr, a refugee is a person who “flees death because of their opinions or civil wars”. The world is a place full of people who flee their countries every day to save their lives because they are persecuted for their way of thinking, for their political militancy, for their ethnicity, for their gender, for their sexual orientation or for many other reasons that threaten their freedom and security. Many countries have hardened their asylum policies, implementing policies of mass expulsions. They have created or increased fences, walls and wire fences (“concertinas”) to prevent these migrants from reaching “sacred” territory. They have also normalized the use of criminalizing and exclusionary speeches encouraged by the increase of parties with extreme right-wing ideology. The generalization of these ideologies progressively erodes and weakens our democracies and, consequently, the freedom of our societies. However, and this is where the justification of this project begins, our mission as teachers has to be different. Education in general, and this project in particular, must be a humanist, realistic and universal counterweight to discriminatory policies and hate speech. We understand the school can help to create a better society, a society where respect, solidarity, empathy and the peaceful, reasoned and democratic resolution of conflicts are the breeding ground for a more tolerant youth. That is why teachers from 2 high schools in France and Spain with common concerns, got in touch through the educational platform School Education Gateway and began to develop an Erasmus+ exchange project. The comparative study of 2 realities as different as an institute in a French big city -Lyon- and a small city such as Jaca (Spain), will allow us to understand better the migration policy of the European Union and some of the political and humanitarian challenges that our students will face in their future.
