Active Citizenship and Environmental Awareness Through Formal and Non-formal Education

Peter Scott, one of the founders of World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) once stated that “the most important thing for us to do if we want to save the world is to educate”. Strange as it might be, in spite of all information about environmental problems and their consequences, they are still not taken seriously, especially by children and youngsters. Therefore, school as the main supplier of education, in cooperation with the respective community, should adopt the appropriate strategies to empower youngsters to assume responsibility for creating a sustainable future. They should be led to reflect upon the impacts of their activities and those of their families and wider society on our planet so that their concern over unsustainable practices can be raised and their capacity to confront and master change increased. Aware of the important role that education plays in achieving environmental and ethical awareness, values and attitudes, skills and behaviour consistent with sustainable development, eight schools from eight European countries, Czech Republic, Italy, Lithuania, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Sweden and the United Kingdom, got together to work on a different approach to environmental education. Teachers’ competencies in the area will be developed and effective instruments/methodologies/strategies will be designed jointly so that the capacity of all partner schools to intervene in environmental awareness will be enhanced.
