So far this year we've explored basic skills, critical thinking, inclusive education and citizenship, through our media (webinars, videos and podcasts) and our regular articles.

Exploring different dimensions of basic skills

After the PISA 2022 results showed a decline in basic skills worldwide, we focused on a different basic skill per month from March to June: literacy, numeracy, science and digital literacy.

Revisit some of our most popular webinar recordings, showcasing effective strategies to enhance pupils’ reading fluency (through cognitive, metacognitive and social strategies) and maths education (through games, technology and interdisciplinary learning).

In our interview with Kari Kivinen, Education Outreach Expert at the EUIPO Observatory, he explains why supporting pupils’ digital skills is essential in the age of AI. Those taking a break from screens can listen to a podcast episode on developing pupils’ digital competences.

We also looked at how the Šiauliai Salduvės Progymnasium in Lithuania has raised its pupils’ interest in science through partnerships, collaborative projects and much more.

Citizenship at the heart of education

We've also explored this year's eTwinning theme, citizenship education - including how to encourage active citizenship, critical thinking and shared values.

In two podcast episodes we discuss practical strategies to integrate European values into everyday classrooms, and explore how democratic education is put into action at Demokratische Schule X in Berlin.

Our interview on restorative practice in classrooms gives examples of practical tools that can help pupils think carefully about how they treat others around them. When it comes to developing critical thinking, even simple discussions and daily questions in the classroom can help. Our webinars look at different strategies to instil critical thinking from an early age and with the help of technology.

We also interviewed Onno Hansen-Staszyński from SAUFEX about challenges to developing critical thinking among European youth and the strategies schools can use to develop this skill.

Inclusive education leaves no one behind

All pupils should have equal opportunities to learn, grow and reach their potential, no matter their background, abilities or gender.

In our webinar on wellbeing, inclusion and school success we presented our new self-assessment tool to evaluate and improve your school’s inclusive practices and policies.

Find further food for thought in these podcast episodes on countering gender stereotypes in education and how teachers can best support pupils with special education needs.

Finally, explore the Helder havo/vwo in Eindhoven, where specialised support helps learners on the autism spectrum to succeed at school.
