The main focus will be for teachers/trainers/staff members to be aware and sensitive in relation to diversity, stereotypes, prejudice, discrimination and racism and to have ideas on how to deal with and teach about those issues at their workplace or in their classrooms. This will be done through active inclusive, cooperative learning methods.
Description
After the course the participants are expected to be more aware and able to actively master simple cooperative learning methods which train their students social- and intercultural competences. Through active and inclusive cooperative methods participants will learn how to create a safe and trusting learning environment to discuss sensitive matters as those mentioned in the title of the course. Day to day program:
Day one: Sunday
- How to develop a trusting and safe learning environment? Work on constructing the feeling of safety and trust within a group through various activities
- Intercultural education and the development of Intercultural education in Europe. Why is it necessary in European societies today? Which methods have been useful?
- The concepts of culture and diversity
Day two: Monday
- The most useful teaching methods with a diverse group of learners.
- Anti prejudice/racist education. Different methods and activities used to teach about stereotypes, discrimination, exclusion, prejudice etc. (Cooperative learning, structured discussions, activities, drama, role-play etc.)
Day three: Tuesday
- Using activities as a method to teach about sensitive matters, focusing on teenagers and young adults. Trying out the material.
- Understanding the concepts; stereotypes, prejudice, discrimination and its consequences
Day four: Wednesday
- Critical look at the statistics
- Everyday discrimination – everyday racism.
- Analyzing your own environment concerning everyday discrimination/racism
- Group work on constructive reactions to discrimination and racism
Day five: Thursday
- Structural and institutional racism and discrimination. Looking into the concepts
- How do we reach a resistant participant or an unmotivated group? Some useful techniques
- Discussion and evaluation of the training program. Drafting a short workshop for dissemination.

- That learners of the educational organisation become more open minded, critical and active citizens
- That learners of the educational organisation learn to live and work with others and learn to appreciate diversity in general
- That teachers/trainers/participants become aware and sensitive about issues such as stereotypes, prejudice, discrimination, exclusion/inclusion, racism and everyday racism
- That teachers/trainers/participants practice reactions against any kind of discrimination and racism
- That teachers/trainers/participants learn active methods to discuss these issues to different age groups
- That teachers/trainers/participants learn how to create a trusting and safe learning environment
Methodology & assessment
The participants will not be assessed but ongoing feedback and discussion will take place by the trainer and other participants.
