Let's do it! Maker Kids

In recent years, the increasing use of technology among young people has led to positive outcomes, but it has also resulted in some negative consequences. In the past 30 years, rapidly advancing technology has caused a deep gap in interest, skills, and ways of thinking between the younger generation and the middle-aged and older generations. When it comes to a world that is economically and socially differentiated, it cannot be said that the skills developed by the new generation, which are often not understood by us middle-aged and older individuals, fall short of responding to the needs of the world. However, although these skills respond to the latest technological and economic developments, it is evident that they fall short in terms of social life skills. The process of technological development, combined with the pandemic, has resulted in the sidelining of labor and production-based professions. The younger generation is more focused on marketing, advertising, or producing in digital environments. While this situation may seem effective in the short term, history shows the reality that a non-productive society is doomed either to depend on other societies or to perish in the long term. For this reason, it is our duty as educators to help our young generation and future generations become developed individuals who meet the needs of the evolving world in terms of technology and new social order, while also keeping alive the innate drive of the human race to continuously produce, explore, and create new things from discoveries. Efforts should be made to ensure that the skills of both generations are acquired in a compatible manner for the development and progress of society. The primary place for these studies is schools. Education, as an important pioneer of social development, must take responsibility in this regard. In our schools, workshops, study groups, or clubs should be established to develop the skill areas of the younger generation. The Maker Kids project has been developed for this purpose, and it aims to lead the way in this field at our school, partner schools, and eventually at a larger number of schools.
