Exploring artificial intelligence with young people

Drawing on consultations with more than 600 children, parents and teachers across Ireland, a report from Barnardos has captured a wide range of perspectives on AI, from curiosity to concern. In it, children describe using AI to support learning and express themselves, but also raise questions about privacy, manipulation and trust.
Key findings include:
- Children want to understand how AI works and how to use it responsibly.
- Many feel uncertain about what AI means for their future, including its role in education and jobs.
- Parents and teachers often feel unprepared to guide children on AI and are calling for better information and training.
For teachers and educators, the report offers a clear insight into what pupils already know and don't know about AI. It also highlights how schools can play a key role in supporting AI literacy, safety and wellbeing. Recommendations include:
- Integrating practical, age-appropriate AI education into the curriculum
- Providing teachers with training and resources on AI safety, use and pedagogy
- Supporting parents with easy-to-understand guidance to help them navigate AI with their children
