Transforming language teaching in the digital era

Digitalisation offers a wealth of tools and resources for language teachers to enhance pupils’ learning experiences. It also underlines the importance of teachers’ digital skills.

Digital skills as part of language teaching

 

Digital competence is nowadays an integral part of any teacher’s portfolio, as described in the European framework.

In many European countries, as a cross-curricular theme or integrated into other subjects, often foreign languages (e.g. in Spain, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Slovenia). Therefore, it is a priority for language teachers too to develop and upgrade their digital competences.

The survey carried out by showed that language teachers generally have a positive attitude towards digital technologies; however, two-thirds are not satisfied with their level of digital language teaching expertise but believe they can improve it.

 

Digital tools to enrich language learning

 

A number of digital tools and resources exist to encourage engagement in language lessons and to develop original teaching methodologies that address pupils’ individual learning needs.
