Empowering rural VET for the green and digital transitions

To safeguard the long-term sustainability of Europe’s countryside, we need forward-thinking agricultural vocational education and training (VET) to train the younger generation of rural Europeans for the green and digital transitions.

Making agricultural education more attractive to future-focused learners is key to . It requires adapted courses, strengthened partnerships between education and businesses, skills assessment data collection and training programmes that enrich digital, environmental and management skills – while ensuring all learners are included.

As many young people look for a meaningful and impactful profession, opportunities in the increasingly versatile and modernised agro-sector should be promoted. Projects such as   – which focuses on innovation in agriculture and forestry, with emphasis on sustainability, digitalisation and the bio-economy of the future – can promote the attractiveness of rural jobs.

 

Collaboration between VET and local companies enhances the competitiveness of VET as a participant in regional innovation systems. The project aimed to improve rural education and working life and enrich the knowledge base of VET teachers by strengthening cooperation between VET institutions, rural companies and higher education institutions.

At policy level, the (CAP) supports young learners and rural entrepreneurs by facilitating funding for VET and their business proposals and ideas.

aims to strengthen the quality, supply and overall image of apprenticeships across Europe, while promoting mobility. The European Rural Youth Observatory in Portugal recently joined the alliance. It will collaborate with a network of researchers in education and training, employment or school-to-work transition in order to develop joint initiatives that will respond to dual transition challenges through apprenticeships, particularly in rural areas.

The project aims to respond to the needs of an agriculture of the future, contributing the skills needed for a transformed agriculture sector in the priority areas of digitalisation, decarbonisation and sustainability.

VET teacher mobility is vital to rural school staffing and skills exchange. Erasmus+ help VET students and teachers strengthen their key competences (particularly language and digital skills), develop specific skills for the future labour market and support their professional development.
